This book was written over 10 years ago. It’s thesis has played out over time. Americans are at greater financial risk than ever. It’s time to do something reasonable. Main things in this book make sense. Risk pooling; use existing social programs etc. However, this book lacked facts and does not deal with the reality that are political system is ran by constituents that feed off the current system and our political leaders lack the courage to deal responsibly with problems. After all, our politicians are not at financial risk and want to keep it that way be staying in office.

This is not the easiest book to read, but the subject should hit home for a number of Americans and it's well-done.Hacker shows how over time, government and corporate actions have led us to a point where just about every risk imaginable is being borne by individuals. Once upon a time, the government and corporations shared in the risk, but we're getting towards a point where that is not the case. With the stories he shares and the points he makes, one can see that it's no accident that stories abound of people who have lost just about everything - be it their retirement funds, their homes and any other savings they have. Oftentimes, something as simple as job loss due to a layoff or an injury/illness (not necessarily to the person, either, as a sick or injured child can do this as well) is what triggers it, and Hacker spends a good deal of time talking about health care since that's about as broken as anything in America.None of this, of course, has been talked about as much as the "prosperity" of the past few years in the American economy, one that was a house of cards and is now in loads of trouble that anyone with common sense could have foreseen.At the end, Hacker shares some ideas well worth considering. Cynic that I am, I don't expect our elected leaders to do that, especially as they've been bought by corporations left and right.The book is not always easy to follow, as Hacker makes extensive use of statistics and at times puts several together, and it at times has the feel of an academic paper being presented at a conference of some sort. But that's a relatively small knock, and it's a book every politician needs to read and probably won't (or they will just dismiss it because they're out of touch and don't have to live the lives ordinary Americans do).

A terrific read. An eye-opener. Everyone should read this book.

This book is fundamental in understanding the issues facing Americans. I am a fiscal conservative, with enough education to gain a undergraduate and post-graduate degree. While I do well for myself, this book outlines the truisms of American life. Unfortunately, America is on the decline because we have shipped our means of production to China and other third world countries.How long can China produce 80% of what we purchase, while Americans HATE American products? The truth is Americans are the hardest working in the world and produce the best products. Unfortunately, someone has instilled upon their children a self hatred of American products to justify sending jobs overseas.Oh well, read the book. While this book doesn't contain "silver bullets" to "solve" the problem, no book does. Anyone who purchases this book and thinks its a get rich quick book is a moron. Any book that promises get rich quick schemes, is just that - a scheme.This book is reality. The reality is be careful, save, watch spending....

Hacker is being touted as a prophet with the recent bail outs and Wall street woes with Lehman, AIG and the subprime fiasco: individuals CANT manage their own money after all, Hacker was right, yes? Hannah Arendt is turning over in her grave at two subtle miscues: reaction and received opinion.Personal responsibility vs. totalitarian control comes down to one simple bad assumption: that government is any less corrupt or any more smart than Wall Steet. The Soviet economy collapsed (the first time) over a tripart deadly combination of excess military spending (with no related revenue stream), a central command economy with no price signals (the free market's central value in a global economy: no human "team" on earth can keep up with the speed or complexity) and, of course: corruption. Does anyone really believe that a roomful of bureaucrats in DC can manage any better than a roomful of traders on Wall Street?Are they less stupid or less corrupt? The lynchpin is ethics in making any balance between individual responsibility for investment and government control and regulation work, and it's sadly lacking, and there are not enough resources in law enforcement or at OMB to police individual ethics, they have to come from within. Neither party has really talked in detail about interfacing risk sharing and safety nets with global trading and ethics, they, and Hacker, miss all three points of ethics, price signals, and excessive defense spending.Reaction is the mother of all screw ups, whether in a marriage, or a social contract. Reaction to terrorism creates crazed defense spending. Reaction to simple markdowns to market creates trillion dollar bailouts. Reaction to bad individual investment choices creates huge new regulatory bureaucracies. This creates the insane pendulum that can't find the moderate balance, and the divisive conflicts between partisan policies.Hacker, as a Clinton insider, has to take a position, and is being touted as "prophetic" with the 2008 corrections. Give him his due, but watch for the next catastrophe when the overreaction creates multi trillion dollar offices filled with government bureaucrats trying to play Wall Street gurus. A whole new generation of GS 11's is what will save us! Then, we will dig up the death-by-regulation Caterpillar Tractor quote from 1970 "When small men cast long shadows, it is a sure sign the sun is setting." The bad assumption in the coming reaction is that the GS crew will be any more ethical or competent than the greedy Streeters! Does anyone really believe that? BTW, who underwrites Hackers "Insured Society" -- Lloyd's, GE Reinsurance, or AIG? Sorry, Jacob, risk is there, and every solution involves shifting! You can't afford war, a welfare state AND a huge dept of govt. risk managers-- quality, service, price-- pick two. Sure, it's easy to say forget war: until Israel and Iran go at it, and the ancient dream of the Russian czars of a warm water port becomes a reality. If God were playing a chess game intended to relegate the U.S. to history, this latest pendulum swing would be a brilliant move.Is this worth reading? Yes. Does it provide a balanced view? No. Does it miss a key conclusion? Absolutely: the assumptions of competence and ethics in big government are glaring, and the economic effects of regulation on businesses and resulting job creation are skimmed over. Look at the relationship of Siemens and the German government: shared assignments and interlocking jobs. Success? No, the global economy will have its way. What about Japanese companies with access to M1 creation and their own government banks? Nope, the global economy trumps them again. Look up the word PARASTATAL on Wikipedia. It is VERY well known in Europe and Japan, but very novel and unstudied here in the U.S. Both German and Japanese economic literature have a lot more reservations, and a lot more research, on the parastatal structure than we do in the US, but will that stop DC from launching right into it? Oh, wait, we just did...

Pros:- Highlights all the must-sees and should-dos- Like all other Lonely Planet guides I've used, this is very thorough, has up-to-date and accurate information on a wide variety of destinations- Prices and opening hours are largely accurate, but travelers should still try to confirm info online when possible (i.e., the Blue Lagoon opening hours, that sort of thing)Cons:- Hypes up less exciting destinations... can be hard to pick out exactly where to go, though the essentials are mentioned- Spends too much time on places no tourist should bother visiting (such as tiny towns with <1k population)- Not exactly geared for photographers; i.e., does not attempt to highlight some of the cool waterfalls, viewpoints, or hikes that are so worth going to.- Not enough information on hikes and more outdoorsy type activities, as compared to the Frommers easyguideKnowing the above about Lonely Planet guides, which is true for most of the series, I still used this to plan the backbone of my trip to Iceland, and added on additional places based on additional research by word of mouth, online, and the Frommer's guide. Would highly recommend pairing this with the Frommer's guide for a more outdoorsy approach to an amazingly beautiful country. Will definitely go back to Iceland, and will definitely use this to plan my next trip.My personal opinions/addendums:- In 7-8 days, it is a little difficult to do the entire Ring Road, but perfectly easy to do the west, Golden Circle, and southeast. In 11-12 days, it is pretty easy to do the entire Ring Road. A section of the Ring Road in the northeast (between Egilsstadir and Myvatn) is both dirt road and a mountain pass.- Try to rent a 4x4 (or Jeep, as Icelanders call SUVs) if possible- Dettifoss and Selfoss are better photographically from the eastern side, which involves ~30km of bad dirt road- Aldeyjarfoss is totally worth the ~30km of dirt road and ~5km of rocky 4x4-only F-roads- Surtshellir offers a super unique lava cave/tube experience, though it's a long drive away from popular destinations and requires at least flashlights (though helmets and headlamp recommended)- For US visitors, Geysir offers nothing special compared to Yellowstone

Hands down one of the best comprehensive guides of Iceland available. We travel extensively and Lonely Planet is one of two publishers we acquire for every trip planning. Full color photos, multiple maps of villages, cities and notable landmarks throughout Iceland, make this book engaging to anyone. Favorite features of the book include - road distances between communities in each overview, Fire & Ice / Wildlife Watching (subsection middle of book) and a pull out map of Reykjavik. I love the history facts contained in each chapter, everything from nordic history to volcanic activity. This is a must have for any traveler, and will join our library of other destinations of where we've been and where we're going.

We recently did a trip on the ring road with a camper van and bought this book to plan the trip prior to departure. Since we slept in the van, we didn't really need information on hotels and can't verify how accurate that is. At the same time, we did rely on information on camping sites and can say that that is well researched. On some nights we actually stayed at sites that were rather remote and are not listed in the book (but can be found on the go following street signs) but we honestly didn't expect that every single one in Iceland would be listed. There's separate websites that can be looked up as well which list all of them. We were big fans on the hot springs in Iceland, of which many are listed in the book. We have to say though, that a lot of them are the rather known tourist spots and can sometimes be quite crowded (even though we went in the off-season). If you're into hot springs, we would suggest to look up more remote ones separately online.The information on interesting sights and 'must-see' places is quite extensive though. This book made it very easy to plan our trip and we can't say that we regret missing anything since everything that was listed and what we then went so see was just mind blowing (that includes excursions, food, museums, etc.). The toned down descriptions in the book actually help in that way since one doesn't go in with too high expectations but once you'll get to experience Iceland, it will take your breath away. Iceland is a beautiful country and should be on everybody's bucket list!

Excellent, up to date info for a 5 day trip we took to Iceland in the beginning of June. Detailed info about the different regions of Iceland, organized in a way that makes it easy to read aloud while you are driving through that area. Historical background plus current social and economic info about the cities (towns really) helped us understand the areas. We brought several guidebooks and quickly settled on this one as the best for info about both Rekyavik and other places in Iceland.Drive the Ring Road! Rent a car and do it! We drove the whole thing in 21 hours, and it was a fantastic experience! Sure we would have liked to have spent more time in many places, but at least we got to see them as we read about them in Lonely Planet! Beware of the speed cameras, though... They ticket 5kph above the limit.

This book is good if you want to get a general overview of things to do in Iceland, but not all that useful anymore for specific advice. Tourism in Iceland has grown 5x since 2010, so travel guides rapidly become out-of-date, and this is no exception. Most of the hotels they list still exist, but they are missing a lot of the new ones, some of the advice they give is a little out-of-date, and some of the 'off the beaten track' places described in the book are now packed full of tourists. Furthermore, the overall quality of this book is lower than some other lonely planet guide books. I've used lonely planet guides in the past, and they were an indispensable part of many trips. With this book, I felt like I could have just used a few internet resources to get the same experience.

About the Author
Philip C. Kolin is the University Distinguished Professor in the Department of English at the University of Southern Mississippi, where for 40 years he has taught courses in composition, business and technical writing, literature, and research methods. He has extensive experience as an editor of several scholarly journals and is the co-founder of STUDIES IN AMERICAN DRAMA (1945-present). He received the Conference of Learned Journals award for the best new journal. In addition, he was also named Southern Mississippi's first Distinguished Professor in the Humanities. Dr. Kolin has published almost 40 books and 200 scholarly articles covering a variety of subjects, including writing, drama, linguistics, and popular culture. He also has written an award-winning book on professional writing for nurses and articles on writing for lawyers and other professionals. Over the years, he has conducted workshops on technical business writing, the publication process, and managing professional communications. He received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University.

In The Vacant Chair, Mitchell draws on the letters, diaries, and memoirs of common soldiers to show how mid-nineteenth-century ideas and images of the home and family shaped the union soldier's approach to everything from military discipline to battlefield bravery. For hundreds of thousands of "boys," as they called themselves, the Union army was an extension of their home and childhood experiences. Many experienced the war as a coming-of-age rite, a test of such manly virtues as self-control, endurance, and courage. They served in companies recruited from the same communities, and they wrote letters reporting on each other's performance--conscious that their own behavior in the army would affect their reputations back home. So, too, were they deeply affected by letters from their families, as wives and mothers complained of suffering or demanded greater valor. Mitchell also shows how this hometown basis for volunteer units eroded respect for military rank, as men served with officers they saw as equals: "Lieut Col Dewey introduced Hugh T Reid," one sergeant wrote dryly, "by saying, 'Boys, behold your colonel,' and we _beheld_ him." In return, officers usually adopted paternalist attitudes toward their "boys"--especially in the case of white officers commanding black soldiers. Mitchell goes on to look at the role of women in the soldiers' experiences, from the feminine center of their own households to their hatred of Confederate women as "she-devils."
The intimate relations and inner life of the Union soldier, the author writes, tell us much about how and why he kept fighting through four bloody years--and why demoralization struck the Confederate soldier as the war penetrated the South, threatening his home and family while he was at the front. "The Northern soldier did not simply experience the war as a husband, son, father, or brother--he fought that way as well," he writes. "That was part of his strength. The Confederate soldier fought the war the same way, and, in the end, that proved part of his weakness." The Vacant Chair uncovers this critical chapter in the Civil War experience, showing how the Union soldier saw--and won--our most costly conflict.

An insightful glance at the unique cultural and social milieu of the Union soldier. Relying extensively on diaries, letters, and other primary sources, Mitchell (History/University of Maryland; Civil War Soldiers, 1988) discusses how the Union soldier understood his military experience. Antebellum ideology used the family as a metaphor for one's country, emphasizing the ``Republican Mother'' who educated her sons as self-sacrificing patriots; thus, ``the centrality of home and the family made them central to the Northern soldier's understanding of the Civil War.'' Soldiers--serving under officers who often came from the same town and who were thought of as equals--regarded their generals as fathers, their officers as elder brothers, and the war itself as a family quarrel. That men soldiered with lifelong neighbors and friends meant that the Union soldier brought the value of the home front into battle with him, giving war a sense of purpose: It also frequently weakened military discipline. Mitchell discusses in depth the Union soldier's distinctive view of manhood; his complex relationships with white Southern women--and with black soldiers, who were generally excluded from the American ``family''; his peculiar brand of religion; and his attitude toward death in battle. Mitchell sees as significant the Union focus in the late Civil War against Confederate civilian society, a focus that weakened the Southern soldier's will to resist: Observing that the Union soldier's strength was that he fought the war with home in mind, he notes that ``the Confederate soldier fought the war the same way, and, in the end, that proved part of his weakness.'' An eloquent revival of the simple verities of a vanished era- -idealism, patriotism, small-town parochialism, sense of family and manhood, and fear of failing in the eyes of one's community--that drove the soldier of the North.
