I'd just add that constant demonizing of capitalist gets really old. Only about a 1/4 of the way through and ready to toss it. She led a privileged life as a diplomat's daughter and thinks she has this great insight as to how the west is evil and contemptuous. It affects content, style and perspective of the book to such a degree that makes reading it tedious. Limousine Liberal would be an apt description2/3 the way through and I stand by my comment. So far the author has no sense of what actually happens in DPRK. On pg 177 she states you are more likely to be killed in the US by a gunshot over car crashes. She also makes reference of how the North Koreans "kicking out the Yanks". For the child of a diplomat her understanding of history is sorely limited. She seems to just makes things up about the West to appease some inner guilt she must feel. I am waiting until I finish to complete a full review, but the book is getting tedious.The author makes neither herself nor the people of the DPRK sympathetic characters.Having read close to 20 books on the subject it is fair to state that treatment of the DPRK is usually not balanced. However, bashing the ills of capitalism does nothing to raise the awareness of the state of affairs in the DPRK. I wouldn't expect every page to be an indictment of the Kim family, but the author tries to bash capitalism and the West whenever she can.I am hoping by the end there is a better, fairer assessment.
This review is for the Audible version. The book is abysmal; not only does the author apparently know nothing about the subject - the Korean peninsula - it reads like someone going to Disney World for the first time. The narration is even worse. Every Korean word is mispronounced; how can Audible use a narrator who has no knowledge of the subject matter or pronunciation. Who would have thought "Pyongyang" had a third syllable, and that there were two pronunciations of it? Chollima, Juche, (which I didn't understand until it was about the fourth time I encountered it and had to use context), even Kim Jong Eun, who is in the news every day. The list goes on... C'mon, Audible, vet your narrators a little, or coach them properly. The only reason it got one star is that, apparently, it's not possible to give zero stars, or minus stars.

North Korea, also known as the hermit kingdom to me is the place I spent three years just south of while in the US military.. We often wondered if those crazy &@$ would run their war machine south, forcing us into the action we trained for. People who are "lucky" enough to go their on a VISA make me wonder if they did their homework on the country and it's huge cult of personality. This book to me was a let down in that I wanted to see what the North Korean propagandists put her through. This was mentioned but it was slow in coming and at times I felt the author had embraced the propaganda machine a little too much. I feared this when I read her far left leaning chapter about fracking and the like in the beginning of the book. If you want to possibly make a movie in one of the few communists countries left, read this book.
Good book. Interesting read. Having read almost 40 books on the DPRK I can say that this book was a worthwhile investment of time and money.
