Frank Lambert's "The Barbary Wars: American Independence in the Atlantic World" is one of the better books about the Barbary Wars. It does a good job at covering the political and religious views of those living in the United States and the various Barbary Nations. It also touches on these same views of those living in Europe. "The Barbary Wars" is far superior in these areas than either "Thomas Jefferson and the Tripoli Pirates" or "The Crescent Obscured." The book does not cover military activities and actions in great detail, which actually allows the reader to better follow the political and religious dialogue better. For the best book on the military military activities and actions during the Barbary Wars I recommend "Dawn Like Thunder" by Glenn Tucker.Minor complaints are that the photos and illustrations are not in chronological order and the author occasionally gets descriptions of naval ships confused, e.g., the USS Guerriere was a 44-gun frigate (not a 74-gun ship-of-the-line as the author states) and USS Ontario was a 20-gun sloop-of-war built at Baltimore in 1813 (not a British sloop captured by Decator as the author states). USS Epervier, which was a captured British 18-gun brig-sloop (but not captured by Decator) also accompanied the Guerriere and Ontario to the Mediterranean in 1815. Also, USS Independence, which was a new 74-gun ship-of-the-line, did show up in the Mediterranean after Decatur had obtained peace with Algiers in 1815.

Decatur famously replied that he would allow "not a minute; if your squadron appears in sight before the treaty is actually signed [...] ours will capture them." The terms that Decatur obtained in the treaties were unimaginable before the war, considering the decades of harassment that the U.S. faced at the hand of the Barbary pirates.This is an amazing book.

Good basic history about a relatively forgotten time

Lambert's book provides just enough detail to understand the historical context and understand the motivation of the pirate communities of North Africa at that time.One can see from this aspect of early foreign policy how the Articles of Confederation were insufficient for the young republic, for the United States didn't even have the power to tax so as to raise a navy to fight the Barbary threat. The book also explains how the Barbary Wars fit into the changing relationship with Great Britain and France, the impressment of seamen, and the events that led to the War of 1812.Those who are reading or have read any of the Patrick O'Brian "Master and Commander" books, Lambert's book is likewise relevant, for these books are all talking about the same historical time period and geographic location.

For those readers like me who have experienced an AJ Jacobs book before, we know that he has a seriously curious mind. And he doesn’t think small. This time around, he has been thinking of his own ancestors and the concept of the World Family Tree (i.e. that we are all, in essence “cousins” descended from a scientific Adam and Eve known as the “Y-Chromosomal Adam” and the “Mitochondrial Eve”). And, of course, Mr. Jacobs dreams up a project to dwarf anything a rational human being might think of: coordinating a family reunion that breaks the Guinness World Record for most attendees. It would be a project that would take over a year to pull off and would become known as the Global Family Reunion.That’s the setup, but as always, AJ Jacobs provides us with far more insightful observations on human nature and in this case, the very nature of what constitutes a “family”. The author counts down the weeks until the big reunion by sharing numerous anecdotes from his own family and others who he encounters during his search along the branches of the tree. He examines such topics as family feuds, immigrants to the US, our Neanderthal cousins, and the many forms of genealogy. He does not shy away from the controversial aspects of genealogy, such as privacy, and presents all sides fairly.I’m afraid I’m making this sound like a textbook of some kind but nothing could be further from the truth. While I certainly learned a lot about the inter-relationships of human beings, this is a downright fun book to read. AJ Jacobs is a humorist and his prose is downright funny. He is a sort of everyman who is very observant and also humble when it comes to his own charm. What he achieved with his Global Family Reunion (with the help of hundreds of assistants) was pretty amazing but the truths about ourselves which he discovers and relates along the way are truly inspiring.This book comes along at a great time. We humans seem to be more divided than ever into our little cliques and tribes based on our differences and often, it is our leadership that is throwing fuel on the fire. To read a book wherein we can take pride in our individual cultural histories but realize just how similar we all are is to find hope for the future.

Like all of Jacobs' books, this was a blast to read. There are two stories going on here: his exploration of genealogy, with the theme, "We are all cousins" and his attempt to put together a big event to bring is extended family together. Each chapter has a theme (twins, black sheep, etc.) and the event planning is given as a coda to each chapter. For me, the best part is that Jacobs is really not natural at this: he comes across as introverted and a little bit awkward. So part of the fun is seeing someone like that go out and meet a very diverse group, and to try to bring a large (think thousands) crowd to an event in New York. Somewhat shorter read than I expected (it ends around 67% on my Kindle to to a long acknowledgements, appendix on genealogy, and OCD-level index) but fun every step of the way.

I was pleasantly surprised to learn upon reading this book that I was the writer's cousin. But then, anyone reading this review is his cousin as well. That's the basic premise of his new book -- that if we follow our ancestors up our own family trees at some time we will find that we are all cousins, however distant. From this insight Jacobs decides to organize the world's largest family reunion - a Global Family Reunion - and the book follows a 51 week countdown until that takes place - in New York, Peru, New Zealand and other locales. During the year of planning AJ finds inspiration attending the reunion in Flat Top, West Virginia of the family that has held the existing reunion attendance record, the annual twins reunions in Twinsburg, Ohio and even a reunion of current families of the legendary feuders, the Hatfields and McCoys. And in the process we learn about the writer's celebrity cousins, his black sheep ancestors, genealogy, the difference between polygamy and polyamory and the often unintended consequences of DNA test results. Fans of Jacobs, a long-time humor writer for Esquire, will recall his three earlier best selling books in which he describes his "humble quests" - to improve his mind, his spirituality and his health. Once again AJ's wife Julie and his three sons are there to cheerfully bear witnesses to his eccentricities and we again appreciate the bittersweet reverence he feels for his deceased grandparents, some of whom he wistfully wishes he had know better. There is a lot of wisdom among the book's wit, all of which makes for a most enjoyable read and a perfect gift for your own cousins during this upcoming holiday season.

The author (AJ Jacobs) is the best I've ever read at what I guess you'd call experiential literature, where he immerses himself in something and tells us all about it in a unique and funny way that makes you feel like you're experiencing it together with him. For example, for one of his books he followed every single rule of the bible for an entire year. In this one, he sets out to show that we're all basically cousins and to create the largest family reunion ever. I actually attended his Global Family Reunion, and it was a fun, quirky, and ultimately uplifting day. The book is similarly fun, funny, and interesting, and it describes all the adventures leading up to the huge reunion. I highly recommend it - it's a quick, fun read that will also make you think!

If you don't know the basics, this is a good book.If you know the basics of depreciation and deductions, you won't learn much.It was well written but dumbed down too much.

Because this is written by two CPAs with experience in real estate investing, I had higher expectations. I read it in two evenings and didn't learn a single thing new about tax deductions as a real estate investor. The information is good but there is absolutely nothing new here and everything could be discovered with a little research on the BiggerPockets web site. If you are just starting out with real estate investing, this is probably worth the investment.

In my humble opinion, this book has some basic common sense nuggets, some "hey, that's really helpful" nuggets, and some, "wow, that's incredibly insightful!" nuggets. You still need to find a great tax advisor but this book opens your eyes to the possibilities if you are willing to do your part.

This book is written from the perspective of a CPA who knows real estate investments. I write this because most CPA’s don’t have the knowledge (or share) what is communicated in this book. If you are a real estate investor, I recommend this book.

Overall a well written book. Touches on a lot of different topics from basic deduction such as mileage to the deeper strategies of tax savings such as self administrated Ira's.To me it lacked a little deeper insights into how many of these strategies work, which to be fair the book never promised.Overall well worth the read for those starring out investing in real estate be they flippers or buying to rent.

I like that the author reviewed different types of accounts including IrAs and sole 401ks but I have heard you can't own real estate in your name in an IRA and it must be an arms length transaction so I wish that would have been explained more. I am glad the author discussed business trips; now I can book them with confidence knowing how to plan them so that they will be deductible. Overall, I'm glad I read this book and would recommend it to someone just getting started :)

Book held my attention form beginning to end. After 46 years investing in real estate, nice too read a book that did not paint the picture totally rosy. At the end of the day lm bored after a couple of years off. The Real Property investment made it possible. I recommend this book for any new comer thinking about entering the business. I needed his information 46 years ago, I could have avoided a few pits.

This book reads well. Worth nothing that the topics covered here are also condensed on several websites/articles available on the web. In short, there is little in this book that you wouldn't have otherwise learned in an afternoon of surfing articles and forums regarding "landlord tax deductions." Otherwise, great book!
